ShellblastHD: Logo, Screens and Info

Hello there Vertigo Games community.

As I am sure you are all aware, I am currently in the process of creating a port of Shellblast to be released on the Xbox 360 Community Games service.I have kindly been given permission to post development updates here to keep you informed with what is happening regarding the games progress.

Before starting development, my experience with XNA was limited but David allowed be to work on this project. This was an ideal situation for me, as it meant I could improve my coding skills and learn how to use XNA without having to worry too much about game ideas and aesthetics.

Now, months later, I am not too far away from finishing the main game mode. It is at this stage I would like to ask if there is anything you would like to see in an Xbox 360 version of Shellblast. If you have any ideas or suggestions then let me know and I will do my best to add them in (as long as they are reasonable i.e. No making it 3D with physics!) .

David finalised a logo for the title a couple of weeks ago, which I think looks pretty nifty.

And to finish, here are some more recent screens from the game, showing off some of the game’s backgrounds in 720p. (click for larger screens)

I will have more to say in the upcoming weeks but it is late here in the UK and sleep deprivation is setting in.

  1. Brilliant, this is looking absolutely fantastic.

If anything I would love to see users being able to configure their control setups and map different controls to different buttons.

Unfortunately I don’t have an Xbox 360 myself, but I’ll be sure to tell all my friends who do.

Good to hear that this is a UK-developed game. All the best games come from here.

    j/k

Anyway. This is fantastic, so far. It’s really coming along great, and looks to be faithful to the original, which is good news too.

I would love to make some input, but I don’t quite know what. Let me think for a sec. Oh, okay, well one thing I can see from that third screenshot is that the timer in the bottom right can be a little difficult to see against that complicated background, so maybe putting it in a box of some kind would make it a bit easier to read. Like maybe a faux-LCD display, like an alarm clock.

I can’t really think of anything else. Like Lost said, customisable controls could be nice.

  3. minmay says:

    Make it 3D with physics.

  4. UltimateAgent says:

    I’m so sad I don’t have an X360…oh well.

Just be sure to keep the awesome rock music. That really helps set the mood during the nuclear bombs.

  5. blueflare says:

    Wow! That looks great!

I agree with all the previous suggestions, sans minmay(:P), and I can only really think of one suggestion. There’s a song in the original called The Aurora, or something similar, and that was the best song, IMO. I think you should leave it in there. 😀

Other than that, I can’t think of anything.

  6. Optum says:

    Thanks everyone.

I’m glad I didn’t enter any verbal or written agreement that I must incorporate everyones ideas or minmay’s would’ve set me back a year and left me scratching my head as to how to make a physics based Shellblast.

Nearly everything that was in the original will remain in this version of the game, included the great music so there are no worries about that being omitted.

  7. Ravenheart says:

You could eventually port it to PC right? Being an XNA game it shouldn’t be that hard.

  8. blueflare says:

    Yay!

  9. chubigans says:

It’s possible to port it to PC, but I’m not sure how that would work given that there’s already a ShellBlast for PC available. It’s something we’ll have to think about.

Awesome post Optum, and welcome to the blog!

  10. UltimateAgent says:

It’s kinda weird seeing chubigans’ message outlined in blue..

  11. UltimateAgent says:

I just realized I forgot to put the ‘not’ in my previous message.

  12. I vote for no port to PC. I mean, we’ve already got a PC version anyway.

  13. Ravenheart says:

But does it work on Vista and Win7?

  14. ashkan_gc says:

    hi
    first of all
congratulation for advancing in game development!!!

i am happy that you immigrated to XNA

    i have two questions
1 how is XNA? is it easy to use?
2 why did not you answer my questions about unity in your pevious post?

    thank you

  15. chubigans says:

    Hey ashkan,

Sorry about not answering those questions in the last post. I’ll do that now. And I’m not coding with XNA, but rather Optum is. I’m still hopelessly clueless with coding at the moment. 🙁
