Complaint Department #1: greenTech

And now for something a bit different. As my games make their way on the internet, I get a fair number of people enjoying them with some positive comments, the occasional email that brightens my day and of course all the help I got from providers of IT support to have the best internet for gaming…and a fair number of people who are offended that I have taken away valuable time from their lives with this incoherent wreck of a game.

This time around I thought we’d take a look at some YoYo Games comments about greenTech. greenTech was up against over a hundred entries and won first place, inspiring a ton of people to try the game out themselves. When I first gave out the beta in the forums, I mentioned that it was a love it or hate it type game…and it seems I was right on the money. The game is different, and does indeed start slow, so I can understand people not liking it or sticking with it until it builds up the action in the third level. Like this comment:

great game , except i got REALLY bored because i had to wait sooo long in the tutorials when u died ... and i exited game.. :))

I do regret that the tutorials are a tad slow, and the gameplay showcased in those tutorials isn’t terribly exciting, so I can understand this. Here’s where things get interesting.

it looks cool, especialy how its ww2 themed, but the plot feals like subliminal messages...

No other World War II themed game comes close to mine. For various reasons really.

Really boring, how can this win an award? Floating pollution dots hardly makes it a 'green' game, nor does it make it fun

But I made the screen green too! And it was called GREENtech. Bam! Instant prize money.

hey dude, props on this, these types of games suck so many balls, in so many places, for such long times, to make, and make well/ not impossible to play!

I thought this was a complaint until I read it a few more times. So ah, thanks!

in this game your soposed to save the world classical music does not fit in any way this type of game. actualy the game is so repetative and boring classical music suites it well

You know…I’m not being sarcastic here, but that was really an awesome burn.

Someone's been playing Fallout 3? Vault-tec, greenTech? Classical music? Slide-esque menus? Hmmm :)

I do actually want to respond to this. I had been playing about eighty hours or so of Fallout 3 before making greenTech, but the funny thing is there was never a single moment while making greenTech that I thought, “Hey, I should make this like Fallout 3!” The weird thing is I was actually inspired by the gun buying menus in FarCry 2, which used an old computer. I think subliminally I was inspired by Fallout 3…I mean, I had to be, right? Hah, how nuts.

after about 3 minutes everyone gets compeatly bores

Please tell me you wrote this story.

As a game it is very bad, this is the type of game your science teacher lets you play in class.

Only if he/she was the most awesome science teacher ever.

Graphics just don't do it. They are clever, but horrible. Where's the story? This game says no. You can't have a story. We'll just say pollution clouds are created and are polluting the environment. Horrible.

“You play as Jack McTanner, CIA operative who is tasked with the impossible: break into the Evileskistan embassy and use their weapon of mass pollution against them. By utilizing their massive weather control devices they have stationed all over the world, you are able to create hurricanes and manipulate the evil clouds of pollution into the good pollution-cleansing centers of America. But the clock is ticking, and the pollution is spreading…will you be able to defeat the evil country and save the world?”

–Level 1 Cutscene–

McTanner: Ok Mr.President, I’m inside the embassy and have hacked their computer. It’s an old model but I think I can utilize it.
President: McTanner, it’s too late! They have started their evil factories and have produced pollution clouds! If they get into the high pressure zones…
McTanner: What dammit, what??
President:…then the world will be destroyed.
McTanner: Not on my watch, Mr.President! I have hacked their computer. Initiate Global Weather Control now.
President: But McTanner, you can create hurricanes that could hurt innocent people! Think of the children, dammit!
McTanner: I will be careful, Mr.President.
President: What could you possibly hope to accomplish by creating these hurricanes?
McTanner: I can control the pollution and steer it into the cleansing centers your Enviro Bill was able to build after you passed that law last month.
President: But we haven’t even turned them on yet!
McTanner: You better turn them on now, Mr.President. We have no time to lose.
President: You heard McTanner! Initiate operation…GREENTECH.
**the greenTech title fades in for thirty seconds as brave music plays, then fades back to the cutscene
McTanner: Oh no, I just sucked in a pollution cloud! That has increased the global pollution. I better be more careful.
President: Dammit McTanner, I didn’t sign up for this!
McTanner: I’ve got it under control. Tell my wife…I love her. It’s go time. Or more like…GO GREEN TIME.
**Level One now starts

Hey, ShellBlast had a story too. Anyone remember that one? Anyone? Anybody? I thought so. I like to not have stories because I suck at writing them. No story for you!

That’s all for now, though I’m sure there are plenty more comments for my other games. Till next time!

    hehehehehehe 😀
Nice post 🙂 espicially the story 🙂 hehehehehe 🙂

  3. Computer Hacking? Destruction of the World? Unusual Weather Patterns? Replace “McTanner” with “Mr Ford” and you’ve got yourself the super generic story for The Conduit. God, I hate Cookie-Cutter plots. 😛

  4. Spaceoff says:

Now that you mention it, I did get bored of greentech pretty quickly.

So you had that story for greenTech and didn’t put it in the game? I’ve lost my faith in you.
