NEW GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: The Sandbox of God: Remastered Edition!

That’s right folks, it’s been nearly five years since the release of the Sandbox of God, so I thought…why not give it a nice new coat of shiny awesome?

The Sandbox of God is by far the most popular game I’ve ever done, and continually gets downloaded more than any game on my site every single month. Sadly, there’s always been a lot of things that I’ve felt needed retouching, from the compressed sound/unlicensed music to the resolution problems, not to mention the lack of Vista support. Well, all of that is now fixed with the Sandbox of God: Remastered Edition!

This game comes in two different versions: Lite and Full/Registered/Pro (haven’t figured out what to call it yet). The Lite version is free and contains the entire Sandbox of God experience, which includes:

-The full Sandbox of God game
-Remastered sound effects
-New music with upgraded OGG support and higher bitrate/quality samples than the previous game
-New resolution/full screen support
-New unlockables and retooled graphics/HUD elements
-Windows Vista support

This game will replace the current Sandbox of God that’s on our site. The Sandbox of God (2004) will no longer be supported, because there’s really no point when the Lite version does everything the old version does, along with the new features and content.

The full version will contain all the elements of the Lite edition, including:

-More unlockable content
-Ability to play at 2x and 3x times the speed during gameplay
-New graphical mode: “The Sandbox of God: Boardgame Edition”
-New game: “Ancient Warfare”

So what’s this “Boardgame Edition” you say? Well, did you know that the Sandbox of God started out as an old boardgame manufactured in Mexico? It’s true!

…ok, maybe it’s not true, but let’s just pretend it is for a second. Now you can relive the boardgame virtually in your old basement with the new Boardgame Edition graphics! Yes, this is what the “Project Clay” thingy turned out to be.

Play with the new graphical style and experience the Sandbox of God in a new, fun way! Woo!

Along with that comes an entirely new game built into the Sandbox of God, called Ancient Warfare. This is not the Ancient Warfare announced a year or so ago, but rather a new spin on the game entirely.

In this game, you must defend your home against the evil rabbits through all your godly powers, which now come in the form of cards. Go through the various eras as technology improves and new cards are unlocked, but beware…because the rabbits are getting more powerful too! Unlock more powerful cards by beating the main Sandbox of God game with the 50%, 75% and the 100% checklist. Darn you, evil rabbits!

So how much will the game cost? When will it be released? Will there be more eras? What about Kablooey? All good questions that I’ll be answering soon, but let’s touch on a few of them:

-The full version of the Sandbox of God will be very cheap. It will be under $5, and no, that doesn’t mean $4.99. It’ll be very, very fairly priced.
-Kablooey is still targeted for release next month, but I had to finish this game first for a special project that will be announced later this month.

So, keep it here on the blog for more info on the Sandbox of God: Remastered Edition, and I hope you guys will enjoy it! Woo!

    zomfg yey

    That is so wonderful.

Also: only SOME of the grammar? ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. marioandluigi206 says:

Wow. This is really qid. I will buy it on day 1. I’m sure there will be people on yoyo complaining that you’re charging for something that used to be free, although that’s not the case at all seeing as all of the original content is free and $5 is incredibly cheap for a game of this quality.
Well, SBoG is acknowledged (rightfully so) as one of the best gm games to date, so it might not be too bad.

I like the spirits poster in the board game. The whole thing looks really cool… i would buy it if it was just a board game.

  3. joe_042293 says:

Next step should be getting SoG made into a real board game. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  4. Garion says:

wow, that looks great – I don’t have the time to read the post in detail now, but will the new resolution the Vertigo Background thingy you’ve got there now or will the background be re-drawn?

  5. Woohoo! I was just telling Billy yesterday how Sandbox of God always was my favourite VG Game. ๐Ÿ™‚

Will you be using particle effects instead of sprite-based effects for the actions this time around?

My only concern is that people will think its just a basic rehash due to the graphics. Nevertheless, I’ll still buy it Day 1 because Sandbox of God was pure awesome.

  6. chubigans says:

@blueflare: hah, yeah, lots of grammar errors in the game. I shall fix them like crazy!

@marioandluigi206: I plan to make it under $5. $5 is the absolute maximum.

    @joe_042293: ah yeah ๐Ÿ˜€

@Garion: I tried scaling the game, but it looked horrible. I’ll have a seperate blog post explaining that, but yeah, it’ll be 800×600 with the frame around the game. There will be alternate frames available.

@LostOverThere: I’ve tried particle effects but honestly the game works really well with the particles it has now! I might go for something different for the BoardGame mode. Also, the rehash situation: I plan to market the game with more screens of the new content than the old game. It’ll be sold a bit differently than my last two games (i.e. not going through portals this time).

  7. Great. As long as I can play in Windowed mode I’ll be more then happy. Sounds good ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. blueflare says:

So you’re selling it here? Neat!

  9. marioandluigi206 says:

I understand that, but you can’t expect the people at yoyo to. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. amidos2006 says:

Wow, but i didnt figure out what is meant by project clay :-??

is that mean that on starting of sandbox I can launch from main menu a board game or normal or Ancient warefare

if that is correct from where name project clay came ????

But its so so so incredible ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. Garion says:

@chubigans – what about just redoing the background image. Basically keeping the same width of the mountain, maybe just finding a new one that runs into it. Everything can still be in its same spot, you would just have an extra run down the sides.

Or is this what you meant?

  12. I completely agree with Garion on this one. The boarder looks very strange, but extended the background would look seamless. Safe margins are annoying, but if done properly, unobtrusive as well ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Garion says:

yes, the boarder [sic] does look funny. In fact that word looks funny.

Also what would be cool (and I cant remember if this is possible or not) but a dynamic background based on the system clock.

During the day it could be blue, then orange during sunrise/sunset and black/dark blue during the night.

  14. joe_042293 says:

It would be possible, but I think a background that just changed as gameplay progressed rather than working on the system clock would be better.

  15. Pete says:

“-Ability to play at 2x and 3x times the speed during gameplay”

How does this work out in a turn-based game?

  16. chubigans says:

Extending the background would be a little tough as all the assets were built for the 640×480 background, but I think you guys are on to something. I’ll have some background selections available and perhaps have support for custom backgrounds as well.

@Pete: basically the room speed is increased from 60fps to 120 and 180fps, which makes everything run in a fast-forward like motion. It decreases the wait time between choosing your powers.

@amidos2006: The Project Clay name comes from the pieces used in the boardgame picture you see up there…all the objects are made of clay. And indeed, you can select from the three different options (Original Mode, Boardgame Mode, Ancient Warfare Mode) immediately from the start in the PRO edition.

  17. amidos2006 says:

    mmm……
about these clay objects and the picture long time ago where there was some clay sticks mm……

was the objective of the clay stick is to make a visualization for what u were doing or u made all the shapes from clay and took a photo for them then modify them and use them as sprites in the game :-??

    mmmmm……………

    Thats so Awesome ๐Ÿ˜€

  18. chubigans says:

I did indeed make the objects, photograph them, and then retouched them in photoshop and imported them in Game Maker. It turned out fantastic, save for two clay works that I was never entirely happy with. I’ll let you figure out which ones those were when you play the game.

  19. This is probably extremely ignorant. But I thought GameMaker’s maximum FPS was 60?

Also, how is the menus going to be structured? Will we have a new menu with the three options, and if you click, say the original mode you’ll then be taken to the original SOG menu (see Metroid Prime Trilogy Box Set), or will a single, main menu be created?

Sorry for all the questions here. Just so damn excited. I only hope I won’t have to wait another 5 years for another sequel ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. chubigans says:

    I’m excited too! ๐Ÿ˜€

The menus will be completely new for this version using the entire 800×600 resolution, as will the options menu and checklist menu.

  21. Spaceoff says:

@LostOverThere – Only if your pc(more specifically graphics card) forces vsync on all programs.

Man, why does big news always have to be released when I’m AWAY.

  22. quick11 says:

I’ve seen some games that are ‘updated versions’ before. For one game, the improvement title was:

    Masterpiece Edition

Maybe that could be better than ‘Remastered Edition’?

Anyways, sounds really cool. I have still been un-able to buy Shellblast and Spirits, so I might be unable to buy this new SoG.

  23. chubigans says:

That could be a better title. Hmmm…

  24. Spaceoff says:

Can’t wait to see how you attempted a Nuke in clay.

  25. victor1221 says:

    OMFG waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  29. damo566 says:

“The Sandbox of God (2004) will no longer be supported, because thereโ€™s really no point when the Lite version does everything the old version does, along with the new features and content.”
I’m not sure this is a good idea. ๐Ÿ˜• I’m a bit worried about “New features and content”.
Nadeo made Trackmania, and then they made Trackmania Original. It’s a remastered edition, but despite this, it is still missing some of the former’s track peices and the physics are different. So, Trackmania Is Still A Different Game To Trackmania Original. Which is why I’m kinda sad there are four copies left in the world.
Lets not have that happen to SoF, mm? ๐Ÿ˜‰
