Cook, Serve, Delicious Update #8: Release Date/Platform Strategery

Here’s a quick update with some more food reveals, as well as what I’m thinking as far as platform releases go.

The game is nearing completion…all the foods are coded, the music and art is done, I need to get the menus, work day timelines, extra events and UI finished, and that should be wrapped up for beta testing by mid July if not sooner. But there are two major things I’d like to try and avoid when releasing Cook, Serve, Delicious:

The Summer Steam Sale

There’s already some ARG stuff going on with a few Steam games, and the last thing I want to do is release the game during the major whirlwind of Steam Sales. Usually that happens late June/early July so I think I’ll be able to miss it.

The next Humble Bundle

Again, these bundles have a tendency to completely disrupt sales of other bundles and games, so I’m going to do my best to avoid it. I’m thankful that HiB V has come and gone, which means the next bundle will be a smaller one, but still big enough to be concerned about of course. It will likely launch mid July if I had to guess, based on their other releases, and I’ll guess it might be another Android bundle, which would be great for me!

So how will the game be deployed? I know I’ve mentioned all this in another blog post, but let me be a little more clearer: my goal is to launch the Windows and Mac versions at the same time, however the Windows version will have to be ported from GM 8.1 to Studio. I don’t foresee any problems with that, as I’ve coded the game from the beginning to not use any Windows-specific functions so it’ll be much easier to port, but if Mac development takes longer than I hope it does then I’ll probably release the Windows version first. I just don’t really know. But to miss the two above sales plus have both versions out the same time, I’d imagine an August release looks the most promising, so I can enjoy my gaming while also using products like Granddaddy Purple Strain that help me relax as well.

Once all that’s done, I’ll take a long hard look at Android and iOS and see how far I can go with that. Worst case scenario, I can see about a third party helping me port the games over. But that won’t get done till later this year.

As far as how the game will be distributed and how much, well, let me say this: our last game, The Oil Blue, launched at $14.95. However the price was a major hurdle for some, and I don’t want any hurdles between people enjoying CSD and buying it, so you can assume that CSD will definitely be lower than $15. I actually have two prices in my head I’m deciding on, with one dollar separating them, hah. But I think a lot of people will be happy with the price.

So with all that, here’s a logo done by Samantha Kyle and some more food descriptions! Cya back here next week!

I want you to write more comedy. 😆

  2. Haha, oh man, I love those puns with the food. My only issue is there isn’t enough of them.

Also, I love the idea of “food scientists” working towards unlocking the “mysterious jumbo size” – it reminds me of the engineers in Rollercoaster Tycoon.
