Ore No Ryomi 3: The Franchise
Status report! (12/12/04)
Whenever I gear up for another sequel to my games, I make sure to play the previous ones first. So I booted up Ore no Ryomi 2: The Restaurant and played a couple of days. Then I dug around and played the very first Ore no Ryomi we did (back in late 2002). Interestingly, I found the first ONR to be the most...whats the word...."true" to the roots of Ore no Ryomi, tracing back to a PS1 import game from Japan way back in 2000. I played it on a Playstation Underground disc, so it was only a demo, and in Japanese. I have searched for that Underground disc since I played it, and never found it...so I have to rely on my memories of the game when thinking about it. It was the most addicting demo I had ever played. The only real info on it is at Gamespot.com, which is where I ripped the graphics for the first game.

Its interesting, because the very first Ore no Ryomi we did had MIDI music and only 6 menu items, with 20+ orders. But it definitely had charm...something that ONR2 lacked, now that I look back at both games. ONR2 lacks consistancy...its a very cold game, whereas ONR wants you to have fun, with its peppery music. I could be wrong here, but this is exactly what I see when viewing both games now. Try downloading both games, play a day in each, and you decide for yourself.

So, with Ore no Ryomi 3: The Franchise, the last game in the Ore no Ryomi series, I am going back to the basics and rebuilding the game from the first. Once again I am starting fresh with a new engine powered by Game Maker 6...and this time, Him will be providing ALL of the sprites, if all goes according to plan. There are tons of graphics in this game, and they all need to stay consistant.

Next is the music. I actually prefer the MIDI to the compressed-sounding music of ONR2. But, we will go forward with some higher-quality mp3 music, as well as custom CD soundtracks and perhaps even loading your own music. There will also be tons of MIDI music to choose from, if you prefer. Or you can turn the music off. Its all up to you.

The sound effects will change, but not too much. It's too early to say what kind of sounds will happen with GM6, such as 3D sound. That is still up in the air.

And the gameplay...man, will there be mondo changes to it. Don't worry, it will still employ the basics of cooking. But the management options will be through the roof.

First off, there is a pause function. I wanted to get that out of the way :) Secondly...well, lets list them:

Ability to Customize the Menu- Now you can take out certain items in the menu and customize what's best for you and your customers. If you bought the pizza and beer ingredients, for example, you can serve just beer one day and only pizzas the next.

Better Customer Implimentation- The previous two games only allowed one pizza customer at a time, one beer customer, etc. Now you can have several beer customers at once!

New Food Critiques! Something I'm real excited about. Lets say you bought the hamburger ingredients. The "tasteometer" reads 15%, or "plain, uninspiring taste." Doesn't sound too good, eh? But as you make more and more burgers perfectly, your "tasteometer" rises...and once it gets to 100%, it achieves "World Famous" status, allows you to add 15% permanently to your advertising, and allows you to DOUBLE the prices of burgers without any negative effect! Cool, eh? But get below 10% on the "tasteometer" by making average or bad orders...and you could turn customers away. Bad orders are even worse this time around...be careful!

Create a Promotion- You remember the chaos that was "Rush Hour" in ONR2? Now you can create your own! Make a "4-5PM Nacho & Steak" hour, or happy hour latenights. Just make sure your restaurant can handle the capacity of the crowds...or else your safety rating will go down! (Yup, the safety rating is back, and more menacing then ever).

The Safety Rating... Now its even more crucial to get a good safety rating. Fail 5 total inspections, and get a -$5,000 ticket. Fail more, and your restaurant will be shut down. Don't worry, there will be plenty of items to buy to make your rating sky-high.

Upgrades! You can have world-famous hambugers now...but there are no such things as "World Famous Sodas," eh? So once you make a certain number of drinks, you will have a chance to upgrade to a self-serve soda display, allowing the cash to flow with no effort from you!

The Iron Cook- More challenges, even harder than before. But the cash prizes are amazing. Get cookin!

New Foods, Chores and More! Almost all of the previous foods return, with new recipies and ingredients, as well as new foods and more things to do (shoot those roaches!).

The VIPs and Critics- Sometimes a VIP may enter...and if the food is good, will leave a huge tip. Local food critics will come by as well to see how your restaurant is doing, and can provide free advertising...if the food is good enough!

And tons more! There are stil more things I haven't touched on yet...such as the new buffet, more customization, better advertising implimentation, the ultimate goal (yes, there is one this time!), minigames, perhaps even a two player mode. Be sure to check our site often for updates!

And with that, I have one last thing to share with you: the release date.

March 2005.

Hopefully earlier. But that's what it looks like. Here's to the last ONR game being the best!
