VG + Windows Vista -- The Guide

Postby d722002 » Thu Apr 19, 2007 10:00 pm

So, you want to play a VG Game on your shiny new Windows Vista installation, eh? Well, not so fast, because some things dont work right or don't work at all... so here's a guide to tell you what works, what doesn't, and what just needs a little push to get it going.

Ore No Ryomi
Made With: GM4/5
Status: Confirmed Working
Known Issues: Automatically disables Aero (if not already) due to the small resolution and outdated rendering engine.

Ore No Ryomi 2
Made With: GM4/5
Status: Confirmed Working
Known Issues: Automatically disables Aero. Sound issues found on some machines running Upgrade editions of Vista (due to old sound card drivers).
Known Fixes: Check for updates to sound card drivers.

Sandbox of God
Made With: GM6
Status: Confirmed Working
Known Issues: Automatically disables Aero.

Vivid Conceptions
Made With: GM6
Status: Partially Working
Known Issues: Enhanced version (with graphics engine) may cause inexplicable problems while using Aero, including random redraws, unexpected crashes to the desktop, and restarting of the Explorer Shell.
Known Fixes: Use the basic version, or disable Aero Effects while playing.

Ac!dbomb 2
Made With: GM6
Status: Confirmed Non-Working
Known Issues: Game fails to initialize or start on Windows Vista. Possible causes include incompatibilities between the GM6 Engine and Windows, .ogg file encoding, and .dll usage.
Note: Attempting to start the game will cause an infinite loop, and will max out the processor usage. Use the Windows Task Manager's "Processes" tab to terminate the process.

Ac!dbomb
Made With: GM6
Status: Confirmed Non-Working
Known Issues: See Ac!dbomb 2.

Liquisty
Made With: GM6
Status: Confirmed Non-Working
Known Issues: Game fails to start due to incompatibilities between the GM6 Engine and Windows Vista.
Note: Causes problems similar to Ac!dbomb. See the Ac!dbomb 2 section for troubleshooting details.

That's all I have for now, I'll update later on after I've had time to test it all.

Vivid Conceptions v1.1 isn't running for me.

I downloaded it and unzipped it. Then I go to the new executable file and run it but literally nothing happens, like the computer just ignores me. No matter how many times I run the file, the computer just pretends that nothing happened.

I tried several ways of opening it (Doubleclick; Rightclick + Open; Start + Run + File path) but nothing works.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium version 6.0 Service Pack 1.

I can run Ore No Ryomi 2, Sandbox of God (with some text glitches, sometimes text overlaps and it's impossible to read), Atlantis, and I think Fall of Atlantis (i'll get back to you on Fall of Atlantis)

Oh yeah, and the link you put on with the converter to convert old GM games to work with Vista is broken.

Vivid Conceptions is known for being pretty sluggish upon start-up. Even with a fast computer it will take about 60 seconds to load, so my best advice would be first double clicking and then leaving it.

As for converting the game to be compatible with Vista, try this link.

I believe that all the GM6 games work flawlessy if the converter is used, though I'm not sure.

VC and Liquisity conversions both cause the Blue Screen of Death on my Vista laptop, and I don't know why... It sucks when you get so far, you really intend to save after you beat a certain level, and in the middle of that level... well, yeah... It happened to me twice.
*recovers*
Anyway, can anyone figure out why this problem keeps occurring? I converted it through the program found on the link on this page, so it should work fine... Help me so I don't keep on doing this ](*,) .

Are you sure that's an issue with the games rather than your computer? If you're getting a blue screen, that sounds more like your processor/video card is overheating than anything else. GM games aren't exactly famous for being resource efficient, and VC/Liquisity especially are likely to push your CPU usage to 100%.

Make sure you've got the latest drivers too. Dodgy drivers are infamous for causing the malicious Blue Screen of Death.

Good Luck. :)

It's so good to see my topic being put to good use. Maybe some updating is in order?
