I was talking to both Pete and Thomas today, and although I'd known this for a while, turns out that hadn't tried to fix the problem either. Nether of them had seen Doctor Zhivago and if that's not stroke inducing, then I don't know what is. But then it got me thinking, there's a lot of great movies out there that were either great among their time and now forgotten, or simply are just underrated. So for that reason, I bring you this list of Films that you probably haven't seen, but that you really should. The list is by no means complete, and is merely my opinion. So feel free to make your own or comment on my obviously perfect taste in films.
Doctor Zhivago (1965): Grab a truck load of popcorn, switch your brain on and strap yourself in for this 197 minute epic by master director David Lean. The drama-romance-political-war film takes place in Russia throughout World War 1 and beyond and is about the formation of the Soviet Union. The film follows the life of Yuri Zhivago, a doctor who loves the ideals of communism yet is against how the Reds want it to be done. Yes, the film keeps coming back to ideologies such as Totalitarianism. An ideal today that most Communists look at with disgust.
The Black Balloon (2008): Best Film, Best Direction, Best Script, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Editing are all awards that the Black Balloon has picked up at the 2008 AFI Awards, and in my opinion, a film that deserves everyone of them. The Black Balloon is set in the early 90s and follows the struggle of a family living with an autistic son. Charlie, the autistic child is beautifully performed by award winning actor Luke Ford (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor). In addition to this, this is the film that Pete quoted me saying had sexy actors in about a week ago.
Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979): First things first, do not get this film confused with the silent 1922 film Nosferatu the Vampire as they're completely different things. Nosferatu the Vampyre is a German film about, you guessed it, Count Dracula. The film features Klaus Kinski as good old Dracula. Unfortunately, the film goes for a mere 1:47 and is a great watch for anyone interested in foreign film.
The Hustler (1961): This film has become quite a timeless classic in our media class, and for good reason. The Hustler is an American Drama film by Writer/Director/Producer Robert Rossen and tells the story of a small time pool hustler. Played by the one and only Paul Newman. No script is perfect, but The Hustler comes exceptionally close with some exceptionally deep themes present in the film which Wikipedia sums up quite well "The Hustler is fundamentally a story of what it means to be a human being, couched within the context of winning and losing". In addition to all this, The Hustler is film noir, and includes many beautiful shots which will make you reminisce of classic noir films.
