I love words.

Some of my favourites at the moment are:

Niggardly - an adjective used to describe someone who is tight with cash (it's interesting to gauge people's reactions to this)

Ersatz - another adjective, meaning an inferior substitute (e.g. "This instant coffee is, in comparison to real coffee, ersatz!")

Quincunx - noun; an arrangement of five objects, one in each corner of a square/rectangle, and one in the centre. Like the '5' side of a die.

Tintinnabulation - A tinkling sound, like with bells.

Onus - a responsibility to be fulfilled after doing something bad, like cleaning up a mess (again, fun to say this to people)

Nope! It's a difficult or disagreeable obligation, task, burden... In the legal system, it's the burden of proof.

Responsibility is pretty much an obligation, and you could argu that it'd be disagreeable and difficult to clean up after something bad.

I think I did a pretty good job of guessing it, anyhow; I've only heard it once, and I never looked it up, I just tried to interpret its meaning from the context.

How about these ones:
(I asked my parents and grandparents for these a while back)

Antimassacar: A protective or decorative cloth over the back of a chair.
(I thought it had something to do with massacres when I first heard it)

Dandiprat: A dwarf or small boy; an insignificant or contemptible person.

Flapdoodle: Another synonym for "Nonsense" as in: "That's Nonsense!"

Kerfuffle: A commotion or fuss.

Mundungus: Rubbish.

Nonsense shouldn't be capitalized.

It's 'antimacassar', not 'antimassacar'. It comes from the 'anti' (the prefix) and the word macassar, as in 'macassar oil', which was some kind of Victorian hair gel.

'Capitalised' shouldn't have a 'z' in it, but you crazy Americans did it anyway.

And yes, I know you're Canadian, but Canada is part of North America, so STFU.

Yeah, but I don't mind when Australians do it, 'cos it sounds awesome. And you make a lot of your own words, while Americans just take existing ones and spell them wrong, or swap their meanings around.

CHIPS ARE THE CUBOID POTATO THINGS WHICH YOU EAT WITH KETCHUP.
CRISPS ARE CRUNCHY POTATO SNACKS IN A BAG.

THIS IS NON-NEGOTIABLE.

AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY, THEY ARE NEVER, EVER EVER REFERRED TO AS "FRENCH FRIES". Especially as they were invented in Britain. They are chips. Nothing else.

I never call them french fries. Unfortunately, I live in a society where if I order chips, I end up with a snack instead of lunch. However, I guess we should just blame the USAires for destroying our language.
