COMCTL32.DLL

Postby JamesBowater » Mon May 09, 2005 7:27 am

Right. I downloaded the resturant game that i cant spell or say. I extracted the files and ran the programme. It kept stopping responing before it flly loaded. When it eventually loaded it said i needed a COMCTL32.DLL file. I email the maker and he told he to download to, put it in the floder and try again. After many more crashes it still said that i needed to download that file! I told the maker and he told me to come here. help!

OK, I know you're British, but for a computer it's "program" not "programme".

When you say "the maker", I assume you mean Chubigans?

If it asks for COMCTL32.DLL, you need to get the latest version from Micro$oft's site and put it in your system (IIRC) directory.

Do a search for the file on your PC, rename it to COMCTL32.BAK.DLL and then put the new COMCTL32.DLL in its place. Then see if it works.

DISCLAIMER: This is pretty standard advice and usually works, but I take no responsibility if it doesn't.

just FYI - the dll file u talked about is the file M$ win 98 and onwards use as a backward compatibility so that one can see the "3D" effects of message boxes which were first implemented in Win 95

COMCTL32.DLL is present in your windows/system (possibly windows/system32 for XP - I'm on 98). You'll need to do a find to work out exactly where it is, so go to Start -> Find (or Search) -> Files or Folders [sic]. Enter COMCTL32.DLL in the box asking for a filename and hit Find. Then you'll know where to put the new COMCTL32.DLL file.

Go to this page and download the free utility. then use it to delete that file (comctl32.dll or whatever), but don't forget to make a backup in a DIFFERENT foldrer. If u use win nt or 200 or xp, better use system restore also.

Next reboot in SAFE mode (press F8 when rebooting) and after windows is loaded, replace the new file with this one. Then restart again in Safe mode. if no problem then again resart in normal mode and try to play the game.

Also download only the LATEST version of the dll file.

Hmm, not sure the best way round this. I'd do it through Linux because I have that also on my PC, but I'm guessing you don't.

Create a directory called c:\comctl and put the new comctl32.dll file in it. Then reboot and press F8, and choose Command Prompt Only. Then type:

CD \WINDOWS\SYSTEM (or SYSTEM32 as appropriate)
REN COMCTL32.DLL COMCTL32.BAK
COPY C:\COMCTL\COMCTL32.DLL .

Then use Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot your PC.

Disclaimer ditto.

Ok... ill phase it how i understand it to make sure i dont break my comp lol.

1) i go into my computer then c drive. in c drive i make a new folder called c:\comctl then move the new .dll file into there
2) restart my computer and press f8 at the same time its doing that. i chose Command Prompt only and typ that crap. I use system not system 32 cus thats where my old .dll file is. then press crtl+del+alt twice to restart my computer again but this time in normal mode.
3) test the game

Is that right?

ps. I was going to use the first one but it sounded more compliex and i didnt want to risk the safty of my comp by getting it wrong.

Uhm, you create the directory C:\COMCTL: you go to the root of your "C" drive and create a directory called "COMCTL".

And you only need press Ctrl+Alt+Del once.

AFAIK, that should work: if it's different I'll post again here ASAP (hopefully before this evening GMT).

Oh, and print off the instructions so you remember them. :-)
