3DS/DSXL/DSi/DSl...gah!

Postby chubigans » Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:09 am

So many Nintendo DS', it's makin my head spin. The 3DS in part has me intrigued...but a lot of people are speculating that it's going to have Gamecube-graphics compatibility. I don't think there's any way that will happen.

But I dunno. What DS do you own, if any, or plan to buy?

I never really cared much for hand-held gaming. I own a Gameboy Advance, and that's it. The DS never really interested me and I hate small incremental updates.

Granted, the 3D without glasses thing is quite intriguing but as you can probably see, it'll take a fair bit for Nintendo to get me excited about the 3DS. Unless of course...

I have a DSi, and the DS (in general) is my favorite gaming system of any kind I've EVER OWNED. And I started on the Atari 2600 back in the day! The library is insane, and frankly the idea of having games that can be played in short bursts fits my lifestyle perfectly. (Many PC titles also fit this formula, which is why I enjoy that as well.) I haven't had much of a choice but to put console gaming aside for the most part, since the experiences usually take 12-100 hours, require larger chunks of time at once, and I've got too much real life stuff going on to handle that sort of thing. I just don't feel productive/content sitting in front of my TV anymore. With the DS, though, I can sneak 20 minutes of gaming in before bed while IN bed, so I really enjoy it. Plus road trips.

As for the 3DS, I guess we'll see what becomes of it. If the games release I want, I'm in, but I think for a good long while we'll see regular DS support from most developers, so it isn't a must-have Day 1 for me yet. We shall see...

Also DSi Ware has been awesome for me. I keep finding little $2 - $5 games that I love. Awesome $2 games FTW.

I've got one of the original blocky DSes, and I've only bought a few games for it. Resident Evil was probably my favourite of them all, just because the idea of having a PS1 game on such a portable device is pretty cool. And Resident Evil, at that.

I also have the first three Phoenix Wright games, and I've played through the first and half of the second. Became bored with it, I'm afraid. Also got Scribblenauts, and became bored with that, too.

Damn, I have a short attention span.

That's it, I think. I would like to get a PSP soon, for the Metal Gear games on there, Zettai Zetsumei Toshi 3, and the cool stuff you can do with your PS3 and it.

As for the new DSes... I'd never consider getting any of them. I never used my DS that much, so upgrading it would be silly.

I'm a PSP man, but that's mainly because of the high emulation versatility when it's haxxored. I generally play more NES, SNES, SEGA, N64, GBC and GBA games than actual PSP games.

You all sicken me.

Back on to the 3DS, I gather we can expect this for a Christmas release? Sounds pretty good for me; Nintendo like to play these things close.

Also: 3DS seems cool, but it was kind of strange of Nintendo to announce it just before the launch of the XL. I hope Nintendo gets a better DSiware purchase system in place before the 3DS launch. Right now if you get a new DSi you are expected to re-buy all of your games.

Nintendo probably doesn't even know what Google is. Honestly, I'll be surprised the day Nintendo actually does something decent with their online system.

It's because Nintendo is nearly 100% focused on the Japanese market, in terms of business decisions. After all, their stock only trades in Japan. So they announced the 3DS at an investor meeting right before the fiscal year was up. Smart move, it sent their stocks soaring over 10% up that week. They might lose a few DSXL sales in America, but they just made a pretty penny on stock in Japan.

25,000yen - 26th February 2011 in Japan.

That's the price the Wii launched at, right?

Something I said a couple of months ago:

The funny part is Ridge Racer 3D is actually coming to the 3DS. I'm not sure whether to laugh or to cry at this...

I'm EXTREMELY hyped about this console now. A Gameboy Virtual console? YES PLEASE. Love that you can transfer your DSi stuff over, because I was worried about that. Also rumblings that you'll be able to download full 3DS games instead of buying them in a store (or you can still buy them) which is cool. I'd love not having to lug around carts when I go on vacation or something.

And the launch lineup... I'm going to be so poor. Kid Icarus, TWO Resident Evil games, Pilotwings, Paper Mario, Professor Layton... My poor, poor wallet come March.
