Chubigans asked me months ago to make blog posts for the site.  Usually I’m working on secret stuff, so it’s a bit hard to just go nuts and post confidential material.  Granted, he gave me the option of posting whatever I was working on currently – but I’m pretty sure the other developers would be pretty upset if I started posting their secret projects on another dev’s site.  Many months and Catch 22′s later, I caught the flu and decided to make a piece of art for the full version game that I would simply post up to the site.  Since Liquisity 2‘s final look is no longer under wraps, it seemed like a good idea.

Every piece of art for Liquisity 2 was painted in exactly the same manner.  I am not an inherent painter.  Sketching it out first makes me feel too committed to the original line drawing and I tend to color by number and forget there’s an overall painting that needs to be done.  So I work it like a sculpture and chip away at chunks of color and block in general shapes instead:

It’s hard to see what’s happening in the middle 3 steps; there are subtle decorative elements going just above his head which you can see in the final and the zoom.  The piece is very loosely based on Mayan relief sculpture.  This was done in about 2.5 – 3 hours (maybe less – my cat needed his human slave and dinner somewhere in the middle of that).  I spent longer on this one since it’s not just a rock texture or an ambiguous plant shape.

This was for fun.  (I’m not sure if we’ll use it for the final.)  My current art production list is just me shooting from the hip.
